Agrippa
called for the meeting with Menas and Lepidus. He was told that Mark was in the
mansion and instructed that he join in. Mark walked in when Menas was arguing
with Agrippa on the death of Cicero.
“Everyone
knows that Lady Fulvia was involved.” Menas shouted. “And we cannot act. Who is
she in Rome?”
Agrippa
was to reply but stopped when he saw the entry of Mark.
“Mark,
please be seated.” Agrippa offered Mark the seat next to him. Menas kept his
silence then.
“We
were discussing on the death of Cicero. He is a valued Roman here.” Agrippa
looked at Menas. “We are also discussing the …….”
“Cicero
was killed by my wife. She told me for he threatened her brother, Lucius.” Mark
cut in and addressed the gathered. “I told her to …. Not to repeat that act. If
Cicero had done wrong, Caesar will decide.”
“Now
that we know it was her, what can ……” Menas asked.
“Nothing
until Caesar gives the command. That is how the Romans work.” Mark looked at
Menas.
“She
is your wife and …….”
“I
will defend for her if need be. Cicero had a deep rivalry with Fulvia, and
their feud is known to Caesar. Let him decide.”
“Are
we not place in charge of Rome now?” Menas pressed on. He has his own agenda.
Brutus told him to pressure the new Triumvirate to act.
“Yes,
but to administrate Rome in the absence of Caesar. For now, the more pressing
issue is the conflict with the other gangs. The Parthians are off the table.”
Mark looked at Menas.
“The
Parthians could had staged that shootout.” Menas stated the accusation. “I say
they are ……”
“I
was there. And it was no staged move by the Parthians. Someone did it. I will
find out. Enobarbus is working on it.” Mark turned towards Agrippa. “All I want
is full access to all the Romans here.”
“Then
the Visigoths?” Menas voiced out.
“I
will meet Alain today. Enobarbus will do the same with the Tongs.” Mark told
them.
“Where?”
Menas was to ask.
“We
do not have a place set yet. We will keep it open.” Mark stood up. “Bosses, I
am needed elsewhere.”
“No,
wait. You cannot act without us in the loop.” Menas was ever insistent to know.
“I
am saying anymore. The ones that hit me and Ashraf were our boys. I am to say
anymore.” Mark lost his composure. “I will …...”
“What
do you mean our boys?” Menas was annoyed. “We are the …….”
“I
have reported to Caesar and was told to act on my own.” Mark looked at Menas.
“Alone.”
Mark
walked out of the library but Menas was not to give up. He looked towards
Agrippa.
“He
does not respect us. I would not like Caesar be used to undermine my
authority.” Menas stood up. “I will …...”
“Sit
down, Menas. I had said it once and will do so again. If we are to secure Rome,
we must act independently of ……. Caesar. Do you all agree?”
At
the yard, Mark met Enobarbus and they discussed there on the findings.
“I
checked the vehicles, and none was the ones I saw. The caretaker told me none
of the vehicles were taken out except for the regular errands, and none came
back with any scratches. I have asked my guys to check on the yards including
Pompey’s.”
“What
about Fulvia’s boys? Her vehicles are sent to Tom’s for repairs or fixes.” Mark
told the other.
“Lady
Fulvia? Are you serious, Boss?”
“No
one is to be spared.” Mark looked at the vehicle he was to take. He has a new
driver, Barney; an old boy who was due to retire. That old timer must had
pulled the short straw among the lot held out. Mark’s reputation was bad news
to drive him.
“When
you see Charlie of the Tongs; be nice and asked him on Moses too. And, on
Egypt?”
“Okay,
Boss. I will meet Charlie at…….”
“Do
not tell me. Just go there.” Mark hushed the other. “And ask Charlie if I have
any outstanding bills? Please pay him or he will spat at my shirt when
ironing.”
