1914; the War that spooks the World Chapter 1

The war that spooks the world.

You will be home before the leaves have fallen from the trees.’ (Kaiser Wilhelm II speaking to German troops in August 1914)

World War I; a journey from the muddy trenches to the ice-cold weather in Eastern Europe. Their journey' their hardship; their pain and joy. This was their tale of the days in the war.
1914

Prologue

Where it all began

Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. He was shot by a member of the Black Hand, a Serbian nationalist secret society.

The Austria-Hungary's Government opted to take the opportunity to stamp its authority upon the Serbians, crushing the nationalist movement there and cementing Austria-Hungary's influence in the Balkans. It issued an ultimatum to Serbia to have the assassins brought to justice, knowing that Serbia would decline; thus giving her a pretext for launching a limited war against Serbia. At the same time, the Austria-Hungary government sought assurances from her ally, Germany, that she would come to her aid in the event of a war. Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary this paving the way for Germany to come in to assist.

That event was to set off a war which was soon to claimed over 37 million; 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history.

The Beginning

1. Weismes Train Station

Dieter Luther, Gefreiter

The Pannier Locomotive announced its arrival at the Weismes Station in the Prussian States that morning of 12th August 1914 with a load of four hundred men from the 1st Guards Regiment. They were the remnants from the full strength of three thousand four hundred men including staff and medical orderlies under the Regiment.

Weismes was a smalltown at the border with a small population who are mostly farmers and livestock breeders. The people here speak Belgium and German, and they have friends on both sides of the border. The presence of the trainloads of soldiers tells them that friendship would now be strained and its best to keep things under wrap for the duration. The station itself was a small one and the Station Master was not bothered to check on his schedule as there are none on the arriving trains. He won't even bother to check the telegraph lines as that was probably down that day. His office was occupied by some officers handling the logistics while he took his break outside under the tree smoking his pipe. It has been like this for the last week and he hoped they would just get over it, so he can do his own work again like normal.

We were the last to disembark at the border to meet our other associates outside of the town limits. Our 3rd Company is under Hauptmann (Captain) Peter Weiner, and our platoon leader is Sergeant Hans Bern, with his Unteroffizier (Corporal) Marcus Dern. We are the 2nd Platoon of the 3rd Company in the 1st Guards Regiment. There are twenty-two of us who are in this unit, of which fifteen of us have never fired a shot at a live target except for some chickens we saw on the way here. My name is Dieter Luther and I held the rank of Gefreiter as I was the better marksman than the rest of the squad.

“Good, you can shoot good.” For that, I was promoted. I was part of the infantry soldier in the 1st Guards Regiment under the German Empire Army and we have just reached the battlefield that day. It was to be our first battle under the First Army who was under the command of General Von Kluck, marching into Belgium country.

Three years ago, I became a baker apprentice in the western part of Berlin, baking bread and decorating cakes for the baker. It was six months ago when I got the letter to be drafted into the active army and I left without a second thought. It was my aspiration to be a soldier but my father thinks I would do well as the baker. I did join the Reserve to spite him but there was not much to do except march and trained with the wooden rifle. My father detested me from joining the Reserve and he kept me as much as possible in the bakery or the house. It’s was always his idea on what I should be and always his on how and who I should be. I was not my brother who followed the father’s wishes and became a teacher.

So when the draft came, I grabbed the opportunity to tell him I was my own man. Life as a soldier was not bad then, although it was boring with all the marching and training. I was to be assigned to Kitchen with my baking skills but the Sergeant decided to make a sniper instead. The best part was when we donned the uniform of the army than with the spiked helmet and the knee long marching boots that distinguish us from the others in other armies. It’s a design of tradition dating some years back from the history of Prussia and Germany. The helmet was made from boiled leather, with spike and fittings made by brass. We have over it our regiment number in red on the front flag held by the Regiment Sergeant leading the men in the parade.

Our army standard tunic and trousers were in field gray cloth with colors identifying the army corps plus monogram identifying the regiment. The Infantry had red piping down the outer seams. We all carried a Mauser Model Gewehr 98 rifle with six pouches of the cartridge that comes in brown leather held four five-round clips of 7.92mm ammo alongside our knapsack. In the knapsack, we carried changes of clothes, blankets, footwear, food, and other personal effects. We are issued for our comfort the gray greatcoat and beige-colored tent cloth plus the essential mess tin attached to the pack. We also carried a haversack, or called “breadbag”, in light brown cloth attached to the belt. The haversack was used for carrying food, eating gear and personal effects. Our water bottle made of aluminum and covered in cloth was hooked to the haversack.

We were proud to be part of the army and marched with pride down the roads to the railway station when the call came then. The last big war for the German’s was the Franco-Prussian War 1870 which we won and claimed some territory. This new war was not started by us but due to an alliance with Austria-Hungary, we had to engage the enemy.

We were told that a Serbian national assassinated the heir of the Austria-Hungary and then hid out in Serbia. Serbia ignored the request for extradition of the murderer, thus both countries are at war. Russia was an ally of Serbia, also declared war on Germany. France who was an alliance of Russia did the same. We had to then defend our borders. That last reason was why we are in the border of Germany Belgium. We were part of the German plan to invade France through Belgium.

So how does a baker apprentice to know all this. I was also privy to the command for the Hauptmann in command there was my cousin from my mother’s side. He was a professional soldier for over ten years waiting for the war to start so he can make some real amendments to his rank.

“For you to be promoted, you either have the influences of the family or be brash to remove your seniors. Or wait for war and then watched them get shot before you can move up.” I listened hard to my cousin. “The pay is better.”

That was the other motivation for me to join the Army. My cousin was the one who assisted me in getting recruited into the Army Reserve when my father protested on my joining.

“Be active there and you will get promoted to the real army in the Regiment.” I adhered to his advice and made myself very active in the Reserve and the call to join his command soon came. He had brief me on the possibility of war since the middle of June.

Peter Weiner, Hauptmann

I stepped off the train onto the wooden platform. It was a relief to be off the train after a long ride from Berlin. I took out my packet of cigarettes and pushed out a stick. I stuck it to my lips but I did not light it. My attention was on the men who were stepping out like me onto the solid ground after a long train ride. There is a combination of veterans and new draftee who had never seen a war. I could see the NCOs' trying to mobilize the men into their respective platoons before they can be matched to their company. The medical orderlies are organizing their horses to be hitched to the wagons to carry the supplies. There were the machine gun squads with the Maxim Machine Gun that are loading onto the wagons.

"Hauptmann Weiner." I turned to see the person addressing me. It was a Feldwebel who was not known to me. He was a short man by my height but he carried a stout body on his frame. His facial was made comical by his short mustache which was thin above his upper lips. I took down my unlit cigarette and looked at the man.

"It was a the design I learned from the southern continent folks. Sicilian to be exact and I held onto the design.” He had noticed my curiosity and it was obvious that many would have commented on his hairline above those lips.

“I am Feldwebel Hans Mauser. Herr Hauptmann." I nodded to his introduction. "I was posted from Berlin but my delay was because I arrived on the wrong train. I came last night and I thought I wait for you this morning before rejoining the Company."

"Good, and welcome abroad. You may help to organize the troops coming in and I would meet you at the assigned Company Command Post. Thank you, Feldwebel." I walked away from the platform to join the squads who were already mobilized to move out. I threw my unlit cigarette to the ground and stepped on it. The cigarette has lost its appeal since. The men were assembling ahead and some were marching when their squad was complete. It would be a good morning walk towards the Command Post which was about a mile away.

"Herr Hauptmann, you can take a ride on my wagon." I was to see an old man who was probably a farmer going back home after delivering his fresh produce to the market. I saluted the man and took his offer. His name was Ian Wilhelm and his farm was next to the land where the Regimen is organizing itself. Wilhelm served on the last war and he was then a farmer in the Belgium border. I sensed some irritation in his words, so I asked him on how is his farm since we came here.

"Your army was like the previous ones; they come and take what they need. That’s why I took out my produce to deliver here before any are taken by them. Civility was not something taught in the army and never was then when I was in it myself. I could see you are fighting for the country but is not a need to starve those you protect. We always said if you want to fight a war, do it in a foreign land. That way your family does not have to worry about losing their daily foods." The farmer was looking ahead on the road which the few organized squads are marching now to the Company's field. I can sympathize with him for in some of the field training sessions, we have raided farms for supplies but never to hurt them. It’s a game for us then to see how well we handle stealth tasks.

We soon reached my The company field and I asked him to stop.

"Please wait." I walked back to the Supplies Tent and requested for some meat sausages. The Sergeant did not ask me why and for whom, but he passed me the food. I walked out to the road but the old man was gone. I stopped the sentry who was stationed there.

"The old Man left soon after you walked in. He told me to tell you that you needed it more in the coming days." The old man could be right. The war has not started yet, and comforts like this could become a luxury by then. I walked back to the Supply Tent and returned the meat. I soon find myself looking for the Command Post.

On my way there, I stumbled on the medical tents and met Oberlieutenant Abel 'Doc' Lenger, our main surgeon of the Company.

"How are things, Doc?" He looked up from his reading of some notes when I asked him. He was a tall man with a lanky build but a set of sure hands that I had seen him take out spikes and bullets from the injured man as if he was playing a game of chess.

"They always looked fine in the early stages. Ask me again, after we been through some battles. Then I may tell you some real needs. Herr Hauptmann." Abel knew me since my University days and we both jumped to join the army two years ago after graduation. But life as a surgeon was not as lucrative as mine and fewer ranks to be filled in those five years since. Abel has disliked me for my advancement but he saluted me as his Commanding Officer.

"Just before you leave, I would like to inform you that I have one man in my tent for minor surgery. He stepped onto a hunter's trap and we need to remove the toes. He is our first casualty and the happiest I guess."

"Patch him up, Doc. Then send him to the Supply tent with a set of crutches. He would not need to fight until we need him unless he breaks his fingers. That is an order, Oberlieutenant." I did not wait for his reply as I walked away to look for the Command Post. I was going to fight a war and I cannot afford to lose any man to silly accidents. There would be a day when I would need them to fight even though they may be dying or blind, but as long as they can shoot or toss a grenade, they are my men to serve as soldiers.

I found the Command Post and reported in.

"Hauptmann Weiner. I am glad you made it. I thought you have joined Belgium and shoot at me next." That was Oberst Erich Kroner, my Division Commanding Officer and he hates my rank. A senior of mine who had served over eight years but those years of inactivity as a Senior Officer has made his look more like a trader with a fine taste for wine and food. One of his trademarks was his clean-shaven the head which he said was a result of the late-night thinking of how to win wars. I would have told him that it was removed by whoring activities that caused its demise from the roots.

I once caught him in the tent trying to make amends to his love life with his lover. He was on his knees and begging for him to come back. That other person was his personal de aide, Lieutenant Berm. I walked out immediately and did not report the incident. The next morning, Lieutenant Berm shot himself with the Luger 9mm. Not one knew why, and Erich did not mention anything.

Since that day, I have been the target to check on any irregularities or misconduct in this Division. I became the whipping boy of the Division.

Erich Kroner, Oberst

The bastard arrived as per schedule. I was hoping his train load would have been delayed and I would be marching without his men. Since that day, he has seen my affinity and caused my lover to commit suicide for shame. This was unforgivable in my books; not so for a son of a watchmaker from Berlin. I am the product of a third-generation trader of goods, but my family decided that we need to have a more renowned career line to boost our name. Hence I was sent to Military School and trained to be an officer. I was the best in my class and my skills as a marksman had no equal until this son of the watchmaker arrived. Ever since he walked into the Academy, he had stood out among the rest of us. He was taller and build stout with the Nordic looks. I could have sworn if there were ladies in our Academy, he would break a number of their hearts. He broke mine though, and it was my first love in the military; the art of marksmanship. He broke my two year’s record in his first attempt and has been above me since that event. It was not his worst misconduct but the one where he walked in on my tent unannounced that I find him totally disgusting. I never forgive him for Berm's suicide; we would had reconciled that night if not for Peter. But the coming war presents a lot of opportunities to have someone to be killed even in friendly fires.

I would have mine soon. And it won't be painless.

"Gentlemen, now that Hauptmann Peter has agreed to join us, I would unveil the great plan of General Von Kluck. It’s part of his great idea under the "Schlieffen plan. We would be the move through neutral Belgium and down to Paris from the North. This is to be done with stealth and quick moves.”

“From our sources in the Intelligence sections, we may be up against the British Expedition Forces (BEF) alongside the French soldiers. But if we moved fast, we would meet them only at the border of Belgium-France. We are part of the First Amy Corps under General Von Kluck. We would be mobilized at dawn when all the other The regiments are here. Good luck, gentlemen."

I looked at the company of my staff leaving my tent. I smiled at them as I have known some of them for several years now; both as cadets and later officers. Some of them deserved better posting but the openings in the army were not many during peacetime. They have proven themselves as exemplary officers and held the colors of the Division high in many areas. It would be sad to see some of them leave for other Divisions or Regiments as the numbers dwindled in the real war. That is something which I have to accept and hopefully, the new ones would be as competent.

During peacetime, most leaders would come up with plans for those contingencies days when the need to use it may arise. The good ones are praised for their strategic benefits and above all, it would win the conflict. Germany was not afraid of any war but they would like to see it ended quickly and with the least casualties. So they planned for these conflicts against their rivals, France and Russia.

It was this call that the Germany Army Chief of Staff, Alfred von Schlieffen was asked to plan a way of preventing a war on two fronts. His initial plan was produced late in 1905. He believed that it was a priority to defeat France quickly, forcing them to surrender before Russia had a chance to mobilize her armed forces. It called for an attack through Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg – the Benelux countries to reach Paris before the Russians can mobilize for war. The General's successor, Von Moltke made some alterations to the plan, by avoiding Holland, and instead concentrating attack through Belgium. Its the fastest way to take over Belgium which would be weak to defend its land against the overwhelming strength of the German Empire. Then the army would march into Paris within ten days. The German Empire would have reached the seashores of Dunkirk by then and prevent the British Expeditionary Forces (BEF) from landing. Holland would succumb by the show of the German mobilization and Europe would be part of the German Empire.

It was a brilliant plan and we were one of the first Regiments to put it into effect in a short time.

"Henri, bring me my schnapps. I am in the mood to celebrate." Gemeiner Henri; my replacement aide for Berm brought me my drink. He was a nice boy and he obeys his orders without question. He does not need me to beg him for his love. He was my love slave. "Fasten the flaps. I do not wish to be disturbed."

Abel Lenger, Surgeon

I place the scalpel down and turned away. I nodded at the nurse who would take over from me. I have removed the mangled toes and flesh, leaving the man a stub for his left foot. Now the nurses would wrap it and sent him to the Infirmary Tent. He would be kept sedated for now and by the time he wakes up, we would be moving to the front with the Dressing Station. He will ride on one of the supply wagons then back to the Divisional Aids Station where they can recover or be sent back to their home city.

I liked the job as a surgeon, and I liked the saving of lives.

But I did not plan on doing it in a live war.

I am a healer, not a killer.

I thought we had enough war since the Franco-Prussian one. But the leaders are always on the need to fight and conquer. They may do so but they forget that war costs live. Life's which I sometimes had to try to save so that they can fight tomorrow after recovery. I cared about my patient and I am concerned about their recovery. I made it a point to save every life that lies on my operating table. I gave them my best and I have not lost a single soul as yet. That's peacetime when the saving rate was very high compared to the wartime. I had seen reports on wartime and the surgeons were rare and overworked. We normally split into two groups; minor and major sections. I was with the major section where the wounds are more fatal.

I spoke to one who had served in the fatal section during the early stages of the war; he told me of desperate moments when you are needed in three or more ops at the same time.

“Make your own choice. Don’t them officers dictate your choice.” The other told me. “It’s not the officer that wins the war but the soldier.”

The doctor told me that once he cut into a patient who has not to be prepared for surgery. There was no time to prepare the patient but to the removal of the bullet then.

“Forget the rules and regulations. A little pain won’t kill them. Take care of the possible infections.” Many patients died from such contamination. Most patients will recover in due time and would be sent back to the fight the war only to die the next day.

That's the reality of wartime, and that was my first experience in it. He also warned me of locating my dressing station near the main roads or in farmhouses.

“Do not mark it to be obvious; no one really respects the Red Cross flag.”

The wounded soldiers can locate us anywhere but during the war, we need to locate the Divisional Aids station as that's where we get replenish on the stocks. They can be hard to find during the war, and more so when we are in the front. The good doctor said do what you can to save lives, even its mean being inhumane to cries of pain. I hope I can do it as well as I was in peacetime.

"Herr Doctor, we are moving out at dawn. Shall I dismantle the Dressing tent?" I looked at the orderly who asked me and nodded. Finally, we are to move with the army to the front.

"If there is any new patient, we would do it on the wagon." I replied to him and he laughed at my so-called joke. But I was not joking then, I was being serious.

Tweet tweet 16/01/2020 ........ Hello 2020 and I am clearing the bed bugs out

I saw in the news that a movie on WWI is out; 1917 it was called. I will watch it when it arrived on the TV or cinema; the former most probably so I can sit on my recliner.

And while sorting the unfinished/ unpublished tales, I came across one tale which I wrote to 38K words and left it for more creative pasture. It was a tale on WWI and it's based on the German perspective. I homed in on four characters in the First Army then. The tale was researched with the assistance of the web; reading articles and mapping to actual events. It ended at the end of 1914.

I stopped it there and moved on to other tales to refresh my creative mind < pun intended, actually, I got juiced out with the reading, and decided porn was better visually >.

Recently after completing DEEP HEAT II, I went back to it and edited the tale ( at about 70% done now ); correcting the phases and added some new lines. It's almost done and will publish it. And as a followup, I will do 1915 with the characters or new ones, but it will still be from the German's view. Or the French. In 1915, the French brought in the African Corps from their colonial states to fight for them.

Why this perspective?

Well, I grew up watching the one side battling the other and lately with exploration inti YOUTUBE, i was watching a wider choice of movies not shown on the local network. And that triggered the tale here. It's not about heroic acts but the sentiments of the soldiers; from the young recruits and the veterans. My characters ranged from the Colonel ( Oberst ), Captain ( Hauptmann ), Lance Corporal ( Gefreiter ) and the Surgeon. I am editing to correct the spelling and brought in more descriptive passages.

It was partly inspired by the movie 'Cross of Iron' ( Cross of Iron (German: Steiner – Das Eiserne Kreuz, lit. "Steiner – The Iron Cross") is a 1977 war film directed by Sam Peckinpah, featuring James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, James Mason, and David Warner. Set on the Eastern Front in World War II during the Soviets' Caucasus operations against the German Kuban bridgehead on the Taman Peninsula in late 1943, the film focuses on the class conflict between a newly arrived, aristocratic Prussian officer who covets winning the Iron Cross and a cynical, battle-hardened infantry NCO. )

Another influence was the comic script 'Charley's War' which I was reading then. Recently, I brought the complete series in a set of three graphic books.

Like in the older days or was it the younger days, it's in the "COMING TO SCREEN' poster frame.

Cheers

Deep Heat II Chapter 3

3.

The initial work in the case was to find out the victim. I had to know him better than his mother would. It will mean the dirt in his life. When I found out digging the Assistant Chief Constable Kellie files, it was alike digging a well in the desert. On record, the Assistant Chief was cleaner than my ass. I took a risk with Anti-Corruption if there was an investigation on the Assistant Chief Constable. Their reply was curt and definitive.

“No, and if there was any, I will say No to you. He does not have a father who was the leader of the gang and a killer too.” The Superintendent replied to me. That was a below the belt blow but I was prepared for it. Later, I found out the Superintendent were mates before when they served on Uniform. The caution came much later.

“The words out that you are looking into some dirt on the Assistant Chief. I am telling you to stop questioning them. They won’t back you on any questions.” I got the advice from a precinct Sergeant who had served for over thirty years. “They are a cartel formed to protect each other. Spread your queries to outside this organization.”

I took the caution with the shrug of the shoulders until I got the call from Station Commander.

“I am here to tell you back off. The queries you raised on the ex- Assistant Chief Constable is trailing to the Precinct. No one wants to stand to answer for it.” I wanted to say fuck off but the warning was right. The boys in blue protect their own. I then saw the tabloid on the coffee table. It was dirt reporting but everyone reads it. I decided then to start on the Press journalists. They all have a tale to tell.

On anyone with a past.

“Sure, we are keen to know who killed the officer?” I heard their replies but the conversation was soon back towards me.
“How did the daughter of Sidney Madden the Crime Lord made it to Chief Inspector after investigating her own father?” I had to fend the questions with the standard ‘no comments’ line. It did not keep the wolves at bay and I changed pack. I moved onto back alley journalist and then the retired bastards. The last was once the pack leaders and with age were outcasts to be a lone wolf.

I did my rounds and soon ended up talking a retired journalist who had raised his hand at the bar counter. I hopped over and brought him the next glass.

“Assistant Chief of Police? Which one?” The elderly drunk was having one on me. I was taking it not when I was the one asking the question.  I moved to stand up when he held out his right hand.

“I remembered now.” The drunk voiced out. “Robert, ye? Robert Kellie. Yeah, I know him.”

“Yeah, like my boobs. They are huge like melons.” I remarked to the drunk. “Can you see them?”

The drunk laughed and then he replied.

“A good move to tell me I am drunk but I am not. I am sober and knew the person you mentioned.” The elder journalist looked at me. “To you, he is your senior officer. To me and to many others, he is just another bloke that was to appear on the press headlines. So, tell me, what do you want to know about this man?

“Who is Robert Kellie? And why did you volunteer?” I asked.

“Why not? You were to buy me a glass. And I was not overlooking that. More to it, I knew Robert Kellie since the day he joined the Police. I am his …. or was his neighbor. We stayed next door, our families. I am Derek Langston. It was from Bob. We called him that when we were young. We ….”

“Where was this?” I cut in. He told me the street. I had read that in the reports somewhere. I had to read a lot of reports when I heard of the murder.

“How long did you know him? I mean after you grew up.”

“Long enough. He went into the Police and I worked as a journalist. The fine relationship we had. We did not meet soon after we moved out, and I sort of lost contact with him. He started off as a Detective. I was the mail boy in the Press Section of the Mirror.  We went tangent on the career path. Soon after, we met and I was the Press Reporter and he was Police Sergeant. He started giving me the hot news that I took to the headlines. He went on until he became Superintendent and ignored me. Then I had moved on to the Middle East and then returned to a desk job. I read of his promotions and then more.”

“What is your name again?”

“Derek Langston, and I am not drunk.” The drinking bloke laughed. “Bob was my friend. And he changed soon after he was made up the ladder. Can I buy you a glass tomorrow? Meet me here.”

I was handed a card.

Deep Heat II Chapter 2

2.

“The Assistant Chief Constable Robert Kellie was found shot by the servants in his study this morning. We will have more updates for you.” The Assistant Chief Constable was the one I was reporting to. I left my breakfast untouched and was told that a waiting car driven by Ian Darren was downstairs.

“The Chief Constable Carter asked for you.”  I wondered why but soon I was to have my ass on the fucking block.

The Assistant Chief Constable Kellie lived in a modest two levels house cramped in the side by other similar units, in a low crime neighborhood and was regularly patrolled by the uniform not because the Assistant Chief stayed there but the notable of the City occupied most of the other houses. The street outside his house was barricaded by the uniforms to the road junction on both sides, with the crime scene tape that marks the boundary. There was a second boundary where the public and the press were kept at bay.

Ian pulled over at the next street; the main one was filled with official cars and vans. We walked over past the inner boundary displaying the credentials while the uniformed there noted our names into the records. I saw Forensics was there, and so is the Station Commander for it happened in her turf. The familiar Section mates were there, and I met a new member named Carly Jones; brunette and short, dressed in the manly suit and looked she was an athlete in the frame. I saw Tabitha and then asked her for the brief. I was surprised that she was still in the Section; being married to the Inspector but the staffing coffer was tight and so was the rotation of staffing. She was stuck until further notice. Little she was she to know, I had my finger in the works. She is good and I hate to lose her to another Station.

Tabitha looked at Ian who nodded.

“The maid who was not live in called to duty as usual at six in the morning. She has the key to the door from the kitchen. She started her duty and when she walked into the library. The Assistant Chief was on his seat. He had used his service revolver to shoot himself in the mouth. His …. “

I stopped her and then walked to the crime scene.

I knew the Assistant Chief Constable was separated from his current wife of over five years. It was not his first but third marriage. They have no kids but the Assistant Chief Constable has one from the second marriage; a teenage daughter who stays with her mother. The home of the Assistant Chief Constable Killie was modest in furnishings with his collection of accolades and commendation. He was a rising star during his heydays and was seen to be the next Chief of Police Constables when the current one retires in a year but that was not happening then. There were also the photographs of him with the City's important people including the affluent names.

Colleen Smith Kellie, the surviving widow was there dressed in the night robe and weeping away. That took me by surprise for they were supposed to be separated. I took a note in my mind to question her then. I went on into the study and saw the man who pulled me up the ranks, seated there with his jaw pried open, and there were grisly soft tissues at the cupboard shelves. The Forensics was there to pick the gobs of tissues. The Forensics Senior then approached me with the revolver.

“It used to be the standard issue. It was replaced in the ’60s. It was fired recently.” I stared at the revolver. It was the Smith & Wesson Model 10; the Police Issuance six-shot .38 Special double-action revolver with fixed sights.  That had a barrel length of four inches. It was an antique compared to the then-standard issue of Glock 22 or 23 or the SIG Sauer P226 semi-automatic pistols. I had seen the glass cabinet containing the older model gun collected by the Assistant Chief. I motioned to the cabinet with the Forensics Team and was given the go-ahead to open it. I saw the old Peacemaker Colt 45 and the Navy Colt 44 alongside some other models like the S&W Victor Model once carried by Lee Harvey Oswald; the man who shot the US President. The ammo boxes were below in the drawer as directed by the Forensics Team. There was a different caliber from .38 to .45 and .357.

“Was he licensed to carry one?” I looked at Tabitha who had raised that concern.

“Well, He may not be but he was a Police Officer and a Senior one too. I will say he was licensed but would do the check on that.”

“Meantime, tell me why his wife is here? They were supposed to living separately?” I asked Inspector Ian Darren. He was married and staying with his wife. I was not and not in the right capacity to ask that.

“I did ask. They were trying to reconcile.” Ian had the answer for me. I was then brief more on their findings.

“We found no trace of anyone breaking in. The wife was in the spare bedroom and she took sleeping medicine to rest. We have taken her blood sample to check.” Ian was giving me the brief as if I was his superior. “The maid was sleeping downstairs and heard nothing.”

“What about any tracks outside the house?”

“We are checking but till now, nothing unusual.”

“We got his phone and checking his last calls during the night. And the wife’s too. And the maid’s.”

“Does the maid have one too?” I asked surprisingly.

“Yes, they do. They are …. in need to communicate.” Ian replied.

“Keep me informed.” Soon I left the crime scene and took the ride back to the Station with another constable. I met the Station Commander who cornered me at the stairways.

“The case is yours, Chief Inspector. That was the Chief Constable’s request. Do it well.” The bitch told me. “Or lose your promotion.”

The fuck you cared I muttered in my breath while the Station Commander strolled off.

Legion Resurrected Chapter 19

Book of Legion
19.

Wrath of the Gods
Hippolyta stood there with her back towards the charging demons. She held out her arms wide and the eight spokes extended like the limbs of the spider, and then it lashed out like the swinging blade of the sword at the demons. The spokes with the serrated ends slashed into the demons; slicing on contact at the demons. A spoke went out like a spear into the beastly demon on the snort and out to the rear as if it was slicing through melted butter. Another of the spokes lashed out the form below and slashed at the lower limbs stopping two demons charging on four limbs. The demons stopped their charge, and it was then Hippolyta turned to face the demons.
Demons! I should have known the hands of Hera is at works here. The Queen of the Amazon rushed forth and then leaped up towards the demons with the spear extended and the shield protecting her form from the demons. She was aiming for the huge beast with the two tusks fronting the snort and was triple her frame. The spear went into the beasts chest and pierced to the back at another demon who thought it was safe behind the beast. The demons were not all afraid of the Amazon and charged towards her. The horde of demons jumped onto the Amazon, and soon she was engulfed by the horde.
Be of my body, you demons! The voice of the Amazon Queen roared and then the horde of demons was flung off her frame. In her anger, she had used her strength to pull or kicked at the demons. She was seen with the bite and cuts marks, but nothing could match the Queen in her fury.
The Amazons will never be subdued by Man again or demons in my reign. Hippolyta called out in anger. Desist or faced the wrath of the Amazons.
The demons are mindless and spurred by their leaders, they charged at the Amazon again. That time, the Amazon had not stood there but rushed towards the demons. The Amazon charged into the first line of demons with the spear stabbing and the shield deflecting the attacks by the demons. The fight was blazing a trail of dead or wounded demons which were then stampeded by the others to flank the Amazon. Hippolyta soon finds herself surrounded by the demons.
Michael, we cannot let a lady fight for us alone. Lucifer roared to the other and then charged at the demons with his trident emitting the flames to drive the demons away. He was carving his own trail to reach Hippolyta. He stood with his back towards the Amazons back.
Horns head, you have come to aid me. What about the Angels? Hippolyta motioned towards Michael and Gabriel.
The Angels are on the fall back for now. They are . how would I place it? Conservative in the approach. Lucifer laughed while his trident was diluting the demon numbers. He then saw Michael looking towards Gabriel.
“Take off, Gabriel.” Michael had called out when he pulled the sword out of the demon’s frame. He had fought for hours, and the hordes never seem to end arriving. They literally climbed out of the dark cauldron, and the place of their fallen demons. They had stood back to back; Michael and Gabriel. The Seraph Warriors were all downed or dead. Michael did look for the others later in the battle and he saw Gabriel had spread his wings to take to the heights.
Gabriel’s Horn was a weapon that required distance and he made use of it. He soared to the heights and then flew in a circle around Michael to drive the demons back or reduce their numbers which had taken through.
Michael turned to look for Lucifer. The later was fighting with the trident and despite the help of Hippolyta, he was losing ground. Michael saw Lucifer slipped and the demons are ever-increasing. ln turn, Lucifer was seen taking to the heights. His wings had spread and he was in the air holding the trident which he turned to fire the flames at the demons.
“Aim for the cauldron. It’s the portal for them to come over.” Michael called out to Gabriel.  The later heard the command of Michael and focused on the cauldron. The sound of the Horn directed at the cauldron initially stopped the influx of demons, and then it was seen to penetrate into the cauldron. The cauldron was seen then to be heated with the rimmed of the cauldron showing the heated metal edge. Then the cracks appeared and pieces of the rim top then dropped off.
Michael saw Lilith and Azrael. They are with the demons. Lilith had changed sides. She betrayed the Fallen.
“Retreat!” Lilith had called out.

Legion
“We must try again. The child needs to be in Atlantis.” Bob called out.  He then resumed the chanting with the others. Charlie, Kyle, and Audrey stood in disbelieving but their hands were interlinked. Soon, they joined in with the familiar words.
A flash of light was seen and they were no more in Diner.
Atlantis, if that was what the place was called. It was immense. Charlie was standing in the Great Hall. They had arrived there, all of them; the Moths brothers and sister, and the Child.
The Angels were left out.
Her child was there held in her arms.
Charlie looked from the group to the Great Hall. She had named it that, for it was the biggest place she had ever seen. It may had covered a full football field if there were any references. There were huge statues of warriors. The reference to the warriors was because they had on amours worn by the knights, and wielded swords with shields. Charlie had seen her share of the swords and ancient battles; she thought they looked like Spartans' designs or influence. Their head gears looked the same in design. It was not on their heads but at their feet. Their facial expression was different. Most were with their beards and their upper limbs tattooed. She saw some etching that was at the bottom before the feet. It may be their names or ranking but to her, it made no sense at all. The statues were arranged in two rows on both sides; twelve figures on one side and on the other side were another twelve. Each figure stood at over thirty feet high, and a distance of forty feet apart.
“Impressive…” Charlie counted down the line. She then noticed the the flooring they were standing on were intricate designs of mythical creatures. They were not in battles but moving in focus as if they were marching. She then noticed the globe design in the center. She moved her focus to the walls. They were not plain in design but the ceiling was like the flooring; intricate in design but not of the creatures. It was not of the creatures known to Man but the mystical ones. There were the unicorns and the flaring dragons from the design of Gods. She assumed they were Old God's creations for they looked as if they were flying. Only God could do that.
“Welcome to Atlantis.”
Well, the Great Hall in Atlantis had no doorways there. Maybe they all had teleport there.
“Soon we will be feted and then rest. We have a long journey here to accomplish. The Child needs to be coached and she will be the balance of power between the old and new.” Bob spoke out. “I wished all of us were to make it but Atlantis was for the selected few. We bid the Angels well.”
It was then the child cried out for the first time. “The child calls for its feed,” Bob told Charlie.

Legion Resurrected Chapter 18

18.

Lucifer
The weeks have passed since Lucifer left Charlie at the Diner but his days were fraught with battles against the Seraph Warriors who were hunting him. He knew not why, but the warriors were on alert for him.
“Done.” Lucifer drew out his right hand from the throat of the Seraph Warrior. He had sensed the warrior trailing him in the city and led the direction to an open area behind the buildings. There he confronted the warrior and the battle was brief with the warrior dead by Lucifer’s blows. The final blow was the finger punch into the throat which choked the warrior. His punch pierced the flesh and into the bone where he blocked the air passage.
“I am sorry, Tiberius. It was me or you.” Lucifer knew the other who had hunted him. They were once brothers but with the war, they have become enemies. He looked to the side and saw the encroaching demons. They have waited at the side whenever he battled. These were not his demons from Hades but of the Hidden Dimension. He had been seeing them soon after his meeting with the Celestials.
“You will not feed on this form. This I command.” Lucifer stepped back and then his trident appeared. He leveled the trident on the dead Angel and fired the blue flame to engulf it. Soon the flames had reduced the form into cinders. The demons deprived of their feed grumbled their ill feelings but they dare not attack the Fallen Leader.
“They are disgusted with you.” The voice of Lilith was heard. Lucifer turned to look at the newly arrived lover of his. They had rekindled their feelings during the war, and even when Lucifer was banished to Hades. Lucifer reached out to Lilith.
“Where were you? I could not locate you.” Lucifer landed a kiss on the lady.
“I was preoccupied. I was assigned many tasks and that took time for me complete. I came here when I heard that you were looking for a child.” Lucifer heard the other and then looked away. His trust with her had never been complete after her betrayal on him. “What child?”
“Huh…. What child?” Lucifer asked back. He knew Lilith was playing him for a fool. She will know of the child.
“I heard you were looking for a child.” Lilith lowered her tone.
“You are mistaken. I was not.” Lucifer replied. “Why would I be? Was it something I missed out? Who told you?”
A series of questions directed back to Lilith who decided to remain silent. She then turned the subject matter.
“Are you still mad at me with Adam?”
“No, why should I be?” Lucifer chuckled. “It’s a long time ago. Now I need to go. Would you want to stay?”
Lilith declined to stay. She had sensed the refusal by Lucifer to answer her. She served a different Master then. And the command was to trail Lucifer to the child.
And removed him if needed.
The signs of change were there, and she was to take sides.
The winning side this time.

Survivals
“Join hands, brothers, and sister of Moth. We need to call on the portal. The Angel cannot call on Atlantis anymore and only we can do it. We will do it the ancient way.” Bob motioned to the others. Percy with his chest bandaged but he was able to walk. He joined Bob and then looked to the others.
“The more of us the better chance of getting to Atlantis.” Percy called out to the others. He was looking from Jeep to Audrey and then Kyle.
“You are mad. All of you are mad.” Kyle snapped out of the delusion that he felt was there. It was all a delusion; the killing and the child.
“The child….” Kyle looked at the child in the mother’s hands. “They want the child.”
“Oh, God. You are mad. I am not giving them the child.” Charlie held onto the child. “She is mine.”
“If she was like us, why had it not cried for your milk since birth? Why does it remain quiet when we are in chaos? Tell me, lady. Is that child his?” Kyle motioned to Lucifer. “He is the Devil. He has horns on his forehead.”
The horns have appeared on the forehead during the battle. It was Lucifer’s mark of wrath.
“I am the Devil Just as he is Michael the Angel. And that is Gabriel. We are all here in person. We came here together because of the child.” Lucifer looked at Kyle. “We would not have if it was any child. That child could be the new balance to the Gods.  The new ones and the older ones.”
“More madness.” Kyle snarled away. “Let me out.”
Kyle approached the doorway and was stopped by Percy.
“Son…” Percy looked at Kyle. “Believe in us.”
Kyle shook his head. He was all confused. It was Audrey who makes it worse.
“I do. I will …. join hands.” Audrey stepped towards Bob. “I just want to …. help.”
“Audrey….” Kyle was disbelieving at the lady’s change of tone. “You can’t be with the madness.”
“Madness? All that had happened here was madness. My parents killed before my eyes. Demons in the killing. And Angels. And more ….” Audrey broke down. She looked at Bob. “You will tell me I am not really mad.”
“Thank you.” Bob then looked at Jeep. “Help us. At worse for the child.”
Jeep looked at Bob. That man was regarded as his father. He had never objected to anything Bob asked. But Bob was not his father; not since the revelations of them being Moth. He looked at Charlie. She was the only real thing there. She was Charlie.
“Stop it!” Kyle called out. It was then Bob lashed out with his right fist at Kyle. “You have been the pain among us.”
“Because I don’t believe in this madness.” Kyle snapped back soon after he was floored by Bob. “I …”
“Then for the sake of this madness, believe it.” Bob hit back. “Now will you do it.”
Kyle stood up and joined the others. Bob looked to the Angels.
“This is not for you. Only we and the Child can be there.” With that Bob led the chant of the ancient verses. Michael saw the twirl of lights that surrounded the group and then the light turned to a swirl of fog before the group was enveloped by it. Then the loud gong sound was heard and the fog dissipated.
The group was still there but another stood in the middle of the group. It was a young lady with a fan spread headgear and the edge of it were the sharp points that reached high above the head. She was dressed in a dark tight bodysuit with the spear and rounded shield. The sword was in the scabbard at the waist belt. The lady had on the laced straps on her shin with the sandals and on her wrists were the golden band that covered her to below the elbows. On the back of the lady suit, a series of eight angled spokes was seen reaching out like spider limbs with the serrated points.
“It can’t be. The chant was …” Bob was stunned.
“Oh, mother of Gods. How did you hail her?” Michael cried out.
“I guess you made out the wrong invitation,” Lucifer muttered.
“I am Hippolyta of the Amazon. I am summoned by Legion.” The newly arrived Goddess replied. “She is the child of the Amazon.”
It was then the demons crashed into the Diner.
